Antique Art Deco Whiting & Davis Pinstripe Gem Closure Mesh Handbag

No collection is complete without a Whiting & David bag! This Antique Mesh Wristlet is a delightful example of the company's earlier bags. Silver and gold stripes run down the main bag via thin metal chainmail-like rings. A single tassel hangs and the bottom point of the bag reflecting the top shape. A cathedral vault-style closure is crowned with a triangular clasp with a blue gemstone in the center. Mirroring the tassel, a tightly woven metal handle with a slider meets the point of the top closure finishing the overall design. A truly exceptional Whiting & Davis handbag!
Collector's Notes:
In 1876, the Wade Davis & Company was founded, but it wasn't until 1892 the first mesh bag was designed by Charles Whiting. Four years later, he and Edward Davis purchased the company and renamed it to The Whiting & Davis Company. By 1912, a machine was invented to automate the mesh-making process.
This bag dates between 1900-1920, likely closer to 1900 based on the shape and details.
